shows  Summer’s end is nearing, however one of the favorite Bahamian summer past times of regatta and homecoming festivals are still going on. And you definitely won’t want to miss the North Eleuthera Regatta.

The island famed for the local pineapple will be buzzing with activity Oct. 10 -13, as thousands of people descend upon the island to enjoy the everything from the sailing races to the non-stop parties, over the Discovery Day holiday weekend.

This regatta will host large-scale events that include a church service, opening and closing ceremonies, nightly entertainment featuring famed Bahamian musicians and entertainers, and let’s not forget the boat race.

“I love this regatta,” said Michael Turnquest, 24. “I went last year and it was a blast. There was food, and I mean tons of it. Plus music, dancing and of course the women.

“I know a lot of people on go to these things to party but for me it’s like a mini reunion with friends and family because everyone goes, so you get to see people you haven’t seen in a while.”

According to Marie Sands, who goes down to sell good old down home Bahamian fare out of her sister’s kitchen every year, she is is ready for the crowd that will descend on the island.

“We have a good crowd, and we make some good money and that’s always a good thing. I live in
Nassau, but I come down to help my sister and make a few dollars the same time. Now in terms of the people, we have persons from all over that come to the regatta so its always full.”

However, Eleuthera will have a bit of competition as San Salvador will also be a hosting a Columbus Day parade on October 12. But, if you do choose to travel to Eleuthera for the weekend, it’s recommended that you book your tickets and hotel early.
