newsandinfo Shanté Swan, a sixth grader at Nassau Christian Academy, was named the country finalist for The Bahamas in the Condé Nast Traveler “My Caribbean” Essay Competition. Swan secured the top spot by beating out her fellow Bahamian competitors with her strong depiction of “My Bahamas.”
Entrants to the competition were asked to pretend they were travel journalists assigned to write a story about their individual countries, observing the motto of Condé Nast Traveler, “Truth in Travel.”
After careful review of the entries from students throughout the Caribbean, the magazine selects a finalist from each country who then goes on to compete for the grand prize. As a country finalist, Swan will be flown to Grand Bahama to attend the 29th Annual Caribbean Tourism Conference (CTC-29) where she and her fellow regional competitors will be presented to CTC delegates.
The grand prize winner will also get the opportunity to read his/her essay to the regional Commissioners and Ministers of Tourism present at the conference. There is also a chance that the winning essay will be published in a future issue of the magazine. Additional prizes for the grand prize winner include a $2,000 cash prize. Two $500 prizes are awarded to the runners up.
Swan entered the Condé Nast Traveler “My Caribbean” essay competition through her participation in the “My Bahamas” Essay Competition. All the entries for this competition were forwarded to Condé Nast who independently selected their own country finalist. Condé Nast Traveler, is an elite travel magazine with a circulation base of over 782,551.
