Eleuthera could soon become the Bahamas’ new premier destination for high-end travellers and second-home owners, as the island is poised to welcome its fourth major development in recent years.

Mainland Eleuthera has reportedly been chosen as the location for a unique new resort by renowned hotel developer André Balazs as part of his Standard Hotel brand.

The resort will partially be designed by international superstar Lenny Kravitz, who also owns a beach-front home in Eleuthera, according to the website hotelchatter.com.

In his latest hotel venture, Mr. Balazs – owner of 10 luxury hotels in New York, Los Angeles and Miami – is said to have decided on Eleuthera as the site to place his newly – acquired $5 million pre-fabricated resort house.

The resort house “Maison Tropicale” was designed by the late French architect Jean Prouvé in the 1940s.

Today Prouvé’s aluminum pre-fab houses are considered to be valuable rarities.

The Maison Tropicale is expected to function as a special suite within the Eleuthera resort.

According to hotelchatter.com, Lenny Kravitz, who has lately been trying his hand at designing hotel lounges, will be creating a hotel bar for the resort.

If the plans for the venture go through, this will the fourth major development to come to Eleuthera in recent years.

Most notable among current development in Eleuthera is an ultra-exclusive resort and Jack Nicklaus golf club on Royal Island.

Cypress Equities, the Staubach Company, and Behringer Harvard are the developers of Royal Island.

At the same time, developers are also planning and constructing projects at Cotton Bay on the former Club Med site.

On the old Club Med site, investor Eddie Lauth and the EIC Resort Group are planning a $200 million project which will include 17 villas, 70 oceanfront condominiums and 135 condo hotel residences.

At Cotton Bay, Eleuthera Properties – chaired by local businessman Franklyn Wilson – and Starwood Hotels and Resorts is developing Cotton Bay Estates, an exclusive resort which will be a member of Starwood’s luxury collection.
