Salt Water Seminar A Good Catch

fishing  Who better to provide cutting-edge fishing information than people who probably go through more fillet knives in a year than most anglers do in a lifetime?

Assembling a panel of first-rate fishermen as instructors has been the hallmark of the Salt Water Sportsman National Seminar Series. The 17th South Florida seminar, set for Jan. 10 at Palm Beach Community College in Palm Beach Gardens, is no exception.

The seminar features offshore anglers who regularly catch snapper, grouper, sailfish, kingfish and dolphin, as well as those who specialize in yellowfin tuna, wahoo and swordfish. Inshore aficionados will detail how to catch trophy snook, sea trout and tarpon.

Their presentations will include the latest in everything from knots and baits to tactics and locations, along with some techniques that are truly different.

Topics include reading and fishing the Gulf Stream; trolling for wahoo, tuna and dolphin; quality yellowtail fishing; kingfishing at night; how and where to catch live bait; how to find and catch snook in inlets and around bridges; sub-surface trolling techniques; kite-fishing for nearshore and offshore gamefish.

“When you consider the varied lineup and experience of our faculty, a ton of solid, useful information will be passed along at the show,” seminar organizer and co-host George Poveromo of Parkland said.

In addition to top local captains, the seminar has instructors such as Capt. Pete Rose of Grand Bahama Island, a hook-and-line commercial fisherman out of Freeport.

“He’s a specialist for chunking and catching yellowfin tuna on rod and reel,” Poveromo said, “and any guy in an offshore boat can do this. He’ll discuss how he approaches the birds, and how he puts out the baits and starts chunking.

“He fishes out of a 26-foot boat, and he trolls for wahoo. Last year he caught a 105-pounder. He has some special techniques that had me in awe. Anybody from South Florida who runs to the Bahamas is going to learn a ton of information from him alone.”

Those who prefer to fish close to home can apply Rose’s tactics to their local waters. They also can learn from the likes of Capt. Billy Taylor of Jupiter, who targets snapper, grouper, kingfish and Spanish mackerel. Mike Riest of North Palm Beach will discuss how to fish spillways and bridges over the Intracoastal Waterway in Palm Beach and Martin counties for snook over 30 pounds. Lou Volpe of Davie will talk about fishing for kingfish at night, and Harry Vernon III of Key Biscayne will cover trolling for grouper.
